Just seven days till we set sail. Today was a nice day, cleaning day. The ladies came in and said, my your house is already clean. Nice to hear since I spend days preparing for then lest they think I am some kind of slob. It is really nice to come home to a fresh cleaned house. I especially love how they make my bed all nice and tight. 

Beyond that I went to visit both Noah and Joy. Always nice to visit with my kids. Came home and focused on the trip. Sorted some and just think I’ll zip up the suitcases and be done with it. I did some searches and print of charts to ‘Antarctic Whales and deck plans.

I have spent the last few hours happy in my clean and quiet home. Here with precious Bela, Aquariums bubbling, fire place crackling. I made a really good soup,today, a kind of chowder, it had corn, rice and beans in it. I also had a helping of ‘Candy Cane Crisp’ ice cream. In between I filed and I sorted. Made few phone calls. And read interesting thoughts on what was heroic in 2022 and why? The more I read the thread the more I was reminded of the significant people we have been witnessing. The world is changing faster than anyone can really keep up with. To borrow some of what I read and yeah, it’s Political. 

Best of the Year - Hero's and why -2022

Volodomyr Zelinsky. He took his courage to the world stage. Brave, the same  basic age as my own children. Some Jews see him as a modern Maccabi, an inspiration to the free world. Proud Man of the Year. God bring peace to the people of Ukraine.

Liz Cheney. She stood up for what is right and just. From the state that brought you The ‘Mathew Shepard Murders’ a brave woman steps up to the plate, against the pressure she did her job. I nominate her for a Profiles in Courage Award.

Cherelle Griner. I read this on a Facebook post and it hadn’t really occurred to me; “If my spouse was sentenced to a long term prison colony in Russia for a bogus, politically motivated charge I would not be able to function. Cherelle fought for her wife and continues to use her platform to call for the release of other Americans.”

Pete Buttigieg: I am so proud of Pete. He is doing a great job and one day he could be President. In the meantime his being an Out and Proud Gay man, married to a school teacher with two children. They role model for the world state what it means. He is brilliant.

All those involved in the Jan 6th Commission, Brittany Griner, Zelenskyy, teachers,  election workers, School Bus Drivers, Stacey Abrams,  all of us who worked for democracy, all the nurses, all those who worked for so many years to see the Respect for Marriage Act.

Nancy Pelosi. She really showed leadership and excited her life to making things better. She went to Taiwan and met Zelinsky in Ukraine. She kissed him on the lips when he addressed the ‘American People. Yeah, her husband was almost killed and she was targeted, I love her. She Is brave. History will treat her well.

Wednesday December 21st, 2022 In just 10 days David Shlay and I will be leaving for our Grand Voyage to circumnavigate South America and Antarctica. For us this will be a big adventure. We will be carried away on luxury ship Holland America the Volendam to the wilds of the Costa Rica Macaw Sanctuary, meet the fabled Blue Iguana at the Queen Elizabeth Botanical Gardens on Grand Caymen. From there to the Panama Canal where will will board a small boat past the giant ships and locks to a quiet estuary where the monkeys come down from the trees and the Toucans call out from their perches. Then down the West coast of South America with stops in Manat, Ecuador, Peru (revolutions permitting) including the pre-Inca ruins of Pachacamec and several in Chile, on to the remote Robinson Caruso Island and its endemic Firethorn Hummingbird. Happy New Year

 Well David Shlay and I are bringing in the New Year on the train to Ft Lauderdale where we will spend 74 days on the Volendam 74-day Grand South America 2023 Voyage to circumnavigate South America and The Antarctic Experience. With stops in Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Panama 🇵🇦, Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, to the Falkland Islands 🇫🇰 , then up to Uruguay, Buenos Aries - Argentina 🇦🇷, Then a week touring Brazil 🇧🇷, Visit Rio de Janeiro and three days up the Amazon to Manaus and back before headed to Devils Island - French Guiana, Dominica 🇩🇲, Barbados 🇧🇧, Puerto Rico and home the end of March. We will start the year expanding our minds meeting new people, learning about other cultures, foods and visitors some of the worlds most beautiful places, all the e-bike filling my head with imagery I can transfer to feeding my private sanctuary over the next growing season.

Manta, Ecuador

Wed January 11, 2023 We woke this morning to a harbor view of Manta, Ecuador. Distant green tropical hillsides set back from the bay filled with numerous small fishing boats.After catching our breath we hurried off for a quick breakfast of oatmeal, scrambled eggs, bacon and hash browns with a tall glass of prune juice and coffee. David had his usual everything vegetarian omelet.  We moved on to the Ocean Bar to meet our tour arranged by ‘Mary’ and we we placed on  group four. After an easy disembark from the Volendam we went to the beautiful port depot and waited and had the opportunity to purchase some local Tegu Nut carving, Ecuador hats and a nice variety of other locally produced handcrafts. I found two hats I liked very much and regret not buying them but figured I could pick them up on the return. Our first stop was the fish market where Tuna are the main attraction. There were of course a number of other fishes, shrimps, crabs, octopus and some other disgusting creature...
